Before America had a president, it had a press.

Philadelphia had newspapers by 1771 — five years before independence. Washington didn't have one until 1789, the same year the capital itself was still under construction. Chicago's first paper arrived in 1833, before the city had much of anything else to write about. Los Angeles got its first in 1851, while the Gold Rush was still reshaping the state around it.

In every case, the order matters. The press didn't arrive to cover the country after the fact. It arrived first, and the civic infrastructure that followed — the institutions, the elections, the public record — built itself on top of a habit the press had already started: telling a community what was happening to it.

That's the premise behind this collection. Not nostalgia for old newsprint, but a fact about sequence. The First Amendment didn't create the free press. The free press created the conditions that made the First Amendment necessary.

**Why this, why now**

America turns 250 this July 4th. It's a year built for looking backward, and most of that looking will land on documents and dates everyone already knows. We wanted to put something next to it that's true but less told: the press got there first, in city after city, and it's been doing the same job, with less and less support, ever since.

Right now, local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two per week. That's not a historical fact. That's a current one. The same institution that helped build four American cities is disappearing in real time — and most places won't notice the gap until there's no one left to cover the school board, the flood, the fire, the story that only a local reporter would have known to chase.
